This guide gives you a dated countdown from now to Thanksgiving, step-by-step methods for hood filters, oven door glass, and greasy cabinets, and what one quart of ADVANAGE 20X Citrus can cover. It also tells you where our instructions stop and your appliance manuals take over, because a sparkling kitchen is not worth a damaged finish. For a broader look at lifting grease from kitchens, garages, and driveways, our full stain guide goes deeper. Disclosure: Advanage publishes this blog.
The Hosting Game Plan in Six Lines
-
Start by November 9. Wash the range hood filters first. They are the dirtiest job and the slowest to dry, and doing them early leaves a week to redo anything stubborn.
-
Know your filter. Aluminum mesh and stainless baffle filters wash. Carbon filters in ductless hoods get replaced, not washed.
-
Oven door glass comes next (week of November 16). Work on the cool glass, keep cleaner off the gasket, and leave the space between the panes to your manual.
-
Cabinets come last (November 23 and 24). Spray the cloth, not the cabinet; keep it damp rather than wet, and dry as you go.
-
One quart of ADVANAGE 20X Citrus covers the whole list two to three times, roughly $11 to $18 of concentrate per round.
-
Order by mid-November. Estimated delivery is 3 to 5 days from the order date.
Why Now Beats the Day Before
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, and Thanksgiving is its peak. New York State's fire-safety summary of National Fire Protection Association data notes that nearly four times as many home cooking fires occurred on Thanksgiving Day in 2015 as on a typical day, with the day before Thanksgiving the second-leading day. Unattended cooking is the leading factor, and no filter soak fixes that. Cleaning does remove one fuel source, though.
The consumer group Choice calls grease and oil buildup on range hood filters a fire hazard, and a greasy oven door or cabinet front adds smoke and odor on the day you least want them.
Cleaning three weeks out instead of the night before also gives you something rare in November: time to redo the spot that did not come out.

What to have on the counter:
ADVANAGE 20X Citrus quart (the company says every scent performs the same, so Clear/Odorless is an option if you would rather not add scent to a kitchen full of cooking smells)
- A mixing applicator or clean spray bottle, so your ratios stay accurate
- Microfiber cloths, plus one extra for drying
- A soft brush, a non-scratch pad and a plastic scraper
- Gloves and eye protection, because the concentrate is classed as causing serious eye irritation
- A sink, tub, or large baking dish for the filters
If you would rather get the applicators, Foamer, scrub pads, and a cloth in one box, the Quad Special bundles them with four quarts.
Check Three Things Before You Start
-
Your filter type. Look for aluminum mesh, stainless baffle (slatted), or carbon.
-
Your manuals. Where a hood, oven,n or cabinet manual says something different from this guide, follow the manual.
-
Where the chart stops. Advanage's published chart lists 20:1 for stainless steel and Formica, 10:1 for stubborn food stains, 3:1 for ovens, and 32:1 for glass. It does not list hood filters, aluminum mesh, sh or wood cabinet finishes. We use the closest published mixes, keep them conservative, and test first.
Advanage writes ratios as parts water to 1 part concentrate, so 10:1 means ten parts water and one part concentrate.
How to Clean a Range Hood Filter: The Fastest Way to Get Grease Off
The fastest reliable route is a hot-water soak with dish detergent, a short dwell with a degreasing mix on the stubborn spots, a gentle scrub, and a full rinse and dry.
-
Remove the filter safely. Turn the hood off, let the light and filters cool, and follow your manual to take the filter out. Take care not to bend the mesh or frame.
-
Soak. Line the sink with a towel, fill it with the hottest water your manual allows, add a squirt of dish detergent, and let the filter soak for about 10 to 15 minutes. This hot-water soak loosens the film so the concentrate only has to handle what is left.
-
Treat the stubborn spots. For a stainless baffle filter, spray a 10:1 mix and let it dwell 1 to 2 minutes; the chart's time for stubborn spots. For aluminum mesh, use 20:1, keep the dwell short, and test a corner first. Never use caustic cleaners on a filter.
-
Agitate gently. Work a soft brush along the mesh or slats, front and back, without pressing hard.
-
Rinse thoroughly. Rinse with hot water until no suds or slick film remains.
-
Drain and dry fully before the filter goes back in.
Broan-NuTone's support page says stainless baffle filters generally need only soap and water when they look unsightly, and that aluminum mesh filters can discolor with phosphate detergents or certain local water, which does not affect performance. To minimize that, it suggests washing them separately in the sink with a mild detergent. ADVANAGE 20X is phosphate-free, but discoloration can also come from your water, so the sink and the test corner stay in the plan. We answer the dishwasher question in the FAQ below.
A quick cost note: if you put the concentrate into the soak itself, a gallon of water at 20:1 takes about 6.4 ounces, around $8 of concentrate, and at 10:1 about 12.8 ounces, around $16. That is why we soak with dish detergent and use the concentrate as a spot treatment.

Oven Door Glass: Degrease It Without Touching the Gasket
Baked-on spatter on oven glass is the same polymerized grease you find on burner surrounds, so it responds to dwell time better than muscle.
-
Start cool. Let the oven and glass cool completely; open the door and brush off loose debris.
-
Protect the seals. Keep cleaner off the door gasket, and do not let liquid run into the vents or slots in the door. Bob Vila's oven-glass guide also says to avoid spraying the gasket, and notes that some manufacturers discourage cleaning between the panes because it means removing the door.
-
Spray and wait. Mist the spatter with a 10:1 mix and give it 1 to 2 minutes of dwell time.
-
Use the soft pad first. A non-abrasive pad lifts most of it. For thick spots, repeat the spray and wait rather than scrubbing harder.
-
Wipe and finish. Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth, then finish with the glass mix: one cap of concentrate to 32 ounces of water, wiping as you spray and never working in direct sunlight.
If you are also cleaning the oven interior, the chart's method is a 3:1 foam from the Foamer, a short low-heat warm-up, a pad while it is still warm, then a rinse and wipe. Skip the warm-up step on the door glass itself, and keep liquid off electrical controls.
Stainless Steel Without the Streaks
Stainless appliance fronts and the range hood exterior take the 20:1 general mix.
-
Spray the cloth rather than the surface, wipe in the direction of the grain, and rinse.
-
Buff dry with a clean microfiber cloth. A long-time reviewer says the cleaner can leave an odd streak on glass and stainless, and a dry buff is how you head that off.
-
Skip steel wool, which scratches stainless.
What's the Fastest Way to Clean Greasy Cabinets Before Guests?
The fastest way is to spray a soft microfiber cloth with a light mix, wipe top to bottom in short passes, and dry each section right away. Plan on about 20 minutes for the zones guests notice most: the cabinets around the stove, the handles, and the lower doors.
|

Test a hidden spot, such as the inside edge of a door; wait a minute and dry it |
|

Zone 1: cabinets above and beside the stove, where grease collects most. Let the film sit about a minute on sticky spots, then wipe |
|
4 |
Zone 2: handles and knobs, where hand oils build up |
|

Zone 3: lower doors and drawer fronts near the stove, drying as you go |
For a wood cabinet finish, the manufacturer's rules matter more than any cleaner's. Décor Cabinets' care guide says residues from smoke, cooking vapors, and grease clean up with a cloth dampened with mild soap and warm water, followed by immediate drying, and it warns against abrasive pads, sponges, magic erasers,s and steel wool. Keep the cloth damp, not wet.
ADVANAGE 20X at 20:1 is stronger than that mild-soap baseline. If your finish looks delicate, start with dish soap and warm water, and bring in the concentrate at 20:1 or lighter only for stuck-on spots after a test. The microfiber cloths we recommend are 300 GSM and non-abrasive, and the product page says they will not scratch painted surfaces.

What One Quart Covers
These are estimates assuming 20-ounce spray bottles and a $39.95 quart (32 ounces, about $1.25 per ounce). Your use will vary, mostly with the oven.

A quart holds 32 ounces, so one bottle covers the whole list two to three times. That leaves enough for a repeat wash of the filters right after the holiday, when they will need it most.
Common Questions
How often should you clean range hood filters?
Broan-NuTone says aluminum mesh filters need washing about once a month, depending on how much you cook, and more often if you fry or use a wok. Its stainless baffle filters are built for heavy grease and generally need cleaning only when they look unsightly. For a big holiday cook, give the filters a second wash a few days after the last big meal, so the grease does not sit for weeks.
Can you put range hood filters in the dishwasher?
Often yes, if your manual allows it. Broan-NuTone says aluminum mesh filters can go in the dishwasher with a non-phosphate detergent, though phosphate detergents or local water can discolor them, which does not affect performance. Choice advises keeping the filter clear of the spray arm and following the manufacturer's temperature guidance. If appearance matters to you, wash aluminum mesh by hand in the sink instead.
Can you clean a charcoal range hood filter?
No. Broan-NuTone says non-ducted carbon filters cannot be washed and must be replaced. If your hood recirculates air back into the kitchen instead of venting outside, check your manual for a carbon filter and its replacement schedule, and wash only the metal grease filter that sits with it. Replace the carbon filter before the holiday if it is due, so it is not working at its limit while you cook for a crowd.
What if there is grease behind the filter?
If you see grease on the fan blades, inside the hood housing, or dripping from the ductwork once the filter is out, that is beyond a filter soak. Turn the hood off, leave it unplugged, and consider a professional hood or duct cleaning before the holiday. Cleaning inside the housing can involve electrical parts, so follow your manual and stop where it tells you to.
